Ebony Johnson

Executive Director of The Resource Room and The Resource Room Child Care and Learning Center Miami, FL Award Year: 2021

Ebony Johnson is a community activist, educator, and leader.  After teaching in Miami Dade County Public Schools for almost a decade, she organized The Resource Room, a nonprofit community center, in 2001. As Executive Director of The Resource Room and The Resource Room Child Care and Learning Center, Ebony educates children through aftercare and day programs. Overseeing four centers that serve over 200 children daily, Ebony also dedicates time to helping adults connect with programs and services that will help them lead successful lives. She also serves as Advisor to the Miami Dade NAACP Youth Council. As a lifelong member of the oldest civil rights organization, Ebony has led peaceful sit-ins and marches for causes that affect her community as well as organizing town hall meetings, and distributing Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas and presents for children and young adults. Through the launch of “Raising Black Leaders,” Ebony continues to advocate for youth and provides leadership that enables people of color to influence policies designed to end systemic racism, police brutality and economic disparities. Ebony earned her MS from the University of Miami. 

Recent News
  • Ebony used her award to launch Raising Black Leaders to identify, motivate, train and support Black youth in becoming leaders in specific fields – education, advocacy, elected office, attorneys, judges, public safety and health – where they can influence, create or change policies at the national, state or local level in ways that end systemic racism, police brutality and economic disparities.

  • Ebony was honored by Miami Gardens Councilwoman as one of Miami’s Extraordinary Women.
