Chantal Hinds

Chantal Hinds is an advocate for students in the foster care system, working to ensure they have the educational support they need to succeed. As a policy entrepreneur at Next100, she focuses on improving academic outcomes and narrowing the opportunity gap between students in the foster system and their peers. Hinds previously worked for the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, where she represented the city as an attorney in child protective proceedings. Hinds was concerned about the disproportionately high numbers of petitions filed each day in Brooklyn and the Bronx, predominantly against Black and Hispanic families, and discovered that 80% of children in the foster system are Black or Hispanic. She went on to work as a senior education attorney at Advocates for Children of New York, using her legal skills to advocate for better educational supports and services for children and families involved in the child welfare and foster systems in New York City, providing direct representation to students and families as well helping parents assert their rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Hinds previously led Brooklyn Jubilee, a faith-based nonprofit in Brooklyn that provided legal services to Hurricane Sandy victims.
